Mulberries are a delicious spring fruit. The tiny seeds are imperceptible, and properly ripened fruit is sweet with a complex flavor and just a hint of tartness.
The extremely vigorous trees produce an abundance of tasty berries during April and May. As they break easily, releasing a delicious but staining juice, their commercial potential as a fresh fruit is limited,.
At SweetSong Groves, we have just one Tice Mulberry, for home production. We do recommend against the much-touted dwarf everbearing variety. The much larger, juicier berries of the standard Tice variety are a far superior fruit, and we find that that contrary to some reports, the size of the tree is easily controlled by a single vigorous pruning at the end of the fruiting season.
