EG-E-0 — Starfruit (Pine Island Gold)

The Pine Island Gold carambola originated on Pine Island off the coast near Ft. Myers, Florida. The story goes that a seedling carambola growing out back of Red’s Restaurant had such excellent fruit that it was propagated by local growers. For a while it went by the name Red’s Dumpster, until receiving its more market-friendly appellation. Ours was grafted from the original tree.

Pine Island Gold is productive and the fruit is excellent— sweet, complex, and refreshing. Ours is a vigorous grower, likely aided by its secondary root system added by the technique of “inarching”.

We expect this to become one of our favorites.
